Modern Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a common eye condition that develops mostly as a result of ageing. We offer advanced surgical solutions and intraocular lens (IOL) options to help you attain optimal vision after cataract surgery.

Schedule an assessment with our ophthalmologists in Calgary to see if you are a candidate for cataract surgery.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract refers to the gradual clouding of your eye’s natural crystalline lens, which can significantly affect your vision. This condition is quite common and often develops as you age. It can also occur following an eye injury.

Cataracts happen when the lens of your eye becomes thicker, less flexible, and more opaque over time, causing changes in your prescription, blurry vision, dimming of colours, increased glare, and difficulty driving at night.

Cataract Risk Factors

You are at a higher risk of developing cataracts if you:

  • Have diabetes
  • Smoke
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have suffered an eye injury
  • Have had previous intraocular surgery
  • Drink an excessive amount of alcohol

The best course of action to manage the development of cataracts is to have regular comprehensive eye exams.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a common procedure that uses ultrasound to break up the cataract, which is then removed from your eye. The lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore your vision, allowing you to see clearly.

At Vector Eye Centre, we offer a wide selection of IOLs, including monofocal IOLs, which are covered by Alberta Health Services. Depending on the treatment you are pursuing, you may want to consider our premium IOLs to improve your vision further, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contacts.

The IOLs we offer include:

  • Monofocal IOLs. Also known as standard IOLs, these single focus IOLs can help improve your vision after RLE surgery. Depending on your prescription, you might still need to use glasses for reading or seeing far distances afterwards; however, your prescription may be reduced after the surgery.
  • Aspheric IOLs. Aspheric IOLs can help mitigate problems with glare and improve your overall visual quality.
  • Toric IOLs. Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism.
  • Multifocal IOLs. Multifocal IOLs are designed to help improve your vision at all distances, including correcting presbyopia, reducing your dependence on glasses and contacts.
