LASIK Eye Surgery Procedure
LASIK eye surgery is one of the most popular eye operations performed in North America. During the procedure, your ophthalmologist uses a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser to create a flap in the corneal surface of your eye. The flap is folded back, allowing access to the corneal stroma.
Your ophthalmologist will then use an excimer laser to reshape the underlying corneal stroma, to correct your refraction. The corneal flap is then folded back in place.
Your eye care team will book subsequent check-up appointments to monitor the healing process.
What Does LASIK Treat?
LASIK is a refractive eye surgery that helps treat common refractive errors. These include:
- Myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia occurs when the eye focuses light in front of the retina leading to blurry distance vision.
- Hyperopia (farsightedness). Hyperopia occurs when the eye focuses light behind the retina making it harder to see up close.
- Astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the image from the horizontal and vertical axes focus at different places, usually because of an irregularly shaped cornea, leading to blurry vision at distance and near.
